Hypomania » Mania and hypomania are more extreme and/or last much longer than "normal" happiness or "normal" anger. Manic episodes often start with hypomania -- the milder form of mania -- and escalate into mania. Although many signs and symptoms are the same, mania is more extreme.

- Mood » Refers to the feeling tone of the subject observed during a psychiatric examination or to the emotional state experienced by an individual for a limited period of time. Examples include depression, mania, hypomania, euphoria, dysphoria, elation, anger, irritability, happiness, sadness, and many others. Disturbances of mood are the primary manifestation of mood disorders.
- Mania » May be thought of loosely as the opposite of depression. It is characterized by elated, euphoric or irritable mood and increased energy. The term may refer to a mental disorder or to a mood state or symptom and is associated with Bipolar Disorder.
- Psychotic » This term encompasses those serious mental disorders, including schizophrenia, major depression, alcohol withdrawal delirium, and others where the individual "loses touch with reality." Hallucinations and delusions are generally considered psychotic symptoms. The individual experiencing them may be described as psychotic.
- Hypomanic episode » A distinct period of persistently elevated, expansive, or irritable mood, lasting throughout at least 4 days, that is clearly different from the usual non depressed mood.
- Mood disorders »The two principal classifications for mood disorders are bi-polar (also known as manic-depression) and depression alone. Bi-polarity is characterized by wild mood swings ranging from deep sadness and depression to euphoric and manic type behavior. Depression is defined as a deep overriding sadness and feelings of despair. These feelings are all pervasive and don't disappear in time.
